Peranakan Wedding

In the past, most Peranakan marriages were matchmade. One obvious reason is to maintain the family’s wealth & reputation.

Once a match is made, an auspicious date is chosen for the big day.

The Baba & the Nyonya would not be allowed to see each other till the wedding day.

The weddings are grand affairs with lots of activities leading to the big day. These included the engagement ceremony,k personal delivery of invitation cards, exchange of wedding gifts with relatives, blessing of the bridal bed and the preparation of the big feast.

The Peranakan wedding usually incorporated Chinese rituals, attire & customs with Malay form, manner and language. In the past, the weddings lasted for 12 days.
