Baba Fashion

The Babas were practical men who wore clothes that were simple but smart. They wore a Chinese shirt or also known as the Baju Lok Chuan, and complimented it with western fashioned trousers & shoes.

Alternatively, the Babas also wear batik shirts. These are now common especially during special events & functions.

At home, the Babas wear sarungs.

Nyonya Fashion

For the Nyonyas, the most popular dress is the Nyonya kebaya, a sexy dress that shows the shape of the lady, yet covers her body fully. This is usually worn with the sarung & complimented with the glittering kerongsang (a 3 piece brooch set), tali pinggang (silver belt) & the kasut manik.

However, nowadays, girls can be seen wearing the Nonya kebaya with modern day jeans.

Another alternative for the Nyonyas is the baju panjang – known also as the long dress, where the blouse is long enough to cover the knees. It is still worn with the sarung. Final touches include wearing it with the kerongsang.

However, the baju panjang is not as popular nowadays as compared to the Nyonya kebaya.
